Amare, Crazy Or Just Misunderstood.

Posted by buddha On August - 27 - 2009

stoudemire

I always want to go to bat for Amare, he has incredible talent, and had a very promising start to his NBA career. However, injurys have set him back, the eye injury in particular may turn out to be career ending. He is also playing on a team that just got through one of the most dysfunctional seasons in its history, then he says something like this via twitter. “This Might Be My Farewell Tour here in PHX.Fans I love the way you guys stand up for me. I love all my faithful fans. Thanks 1 love Sun Tzu!” Amare Stoudemire has been real open about his future endevors, dealing with his eye injury and his feelings towards the Suns. This openness has lead to a backlash of sorts. Fans feel he is selfish or childish. The fans get offended when he talks about playing for another team. When he picks his own nick-name “Sun Tzu” they think he is imature and feel his priorties are misguided. Phoenix Stan at brightsideofthesun.com has a different take on the situation. “People close to Amare describe him as someone who struggles to say “no” to the people around him which is indicative of what we already knew about this talented young star. He’s a guy with a huge heart and who’s talent and abilities have carried him very far in life and he’s also someone who seems to have lacked the right mentor to guide him through a very unique set of circumstances.”  We have to remember Amare has contributed a lot to the Suns. He has always behaved himself while representing the Suns. No on the/off the court brawls, no DUI’s, no shooting himself in the leg. I think he is generally a nice guy in a weird and insecure situation. Like I said before, if he manages to put good numbers this season it will be amazing. Two career comebacks at this level is a rare feat. Read more of Phoenix Stan’s take on Amare at brightsideofthesun.com

Arizona Cardinals Big Fan.

Patton Oswald is set to star in “Big Fan” a movie about a guy who gets shot by a star football player on his favorite team, and then has to choose between his love for that team or his respect for the law. I don’t know too many fans that would go to THAT extreme but I do know of one Cards fan who is taking it to another level. David Gilmore is the founder and president of the AZ Cardinals Fan Club. He bleeds Cardinal red, and has created a website for The Big Red Army, azcardsfanclub.com. Being a die-hard fan is never easy. You live and die with each win or loss. When the Suns lose a game that I happened to miss, I feel like I was responsible. Had I watched the game, maybe the outcome would have been different. Crazy right? Everybody has a little David Gilmore in them, we can lose site of our priorities when it comes to our favorite team. “Football has been his life, so much so that Gilmore and his wife, Colleen, agreed to schedule the birth of their daughters in the off-season. And so it happened that the births of Courtney, Zowie and Saydee did not conflict with the Arizona Cardinals schedule.” Nice. I like where your heads at Gilmore. Read more here

Suns Vs Team Chemistry

Posted by buddha On August - 20 - 2009

I just read that article by Paolo Boivin, in which she reports Shaq stole the idea for his reality show “Shaq Vs” from Steve Nash. This is why Steve Nash is listed as executive producer on the show credits. ”

“Shortly after O’Neal was traded to the Suns in February 2008, Nash mentioned to his new teammate a reality show he was pursuing. It would feature the Suns point guard taking on professional athletes in their own sport.

The topic didn’t come up again until early in the 2008-09 season, when O’Neal boarded the Suns bus and told the team he would be starring in a new reality show in which he would be taking on, you got it, professional athletes in their own sport.

“You mean the idea you stole from me?” one Suns representative said he heard Nash say.”

What this story reveals is just how screwed up the team chemistry was last season and how no amount of tweaks to the roster or coaching changes would have salvaged it. That team was built to fail. I think it also helps explain how content Nash is with his decision to stay with the Suns. He is a big fish in what “ego wise” is a very small pond. The personalities of this (2009) team mesh together much better. Everyone has there place and there is no confusion as to who is the team leader. Read more at azcentral.com

Amare’s Back On The Court.

Posted by buddha On August - 19 - 2009

Amare Stoudemire completed his first individual on the court workout Tuesday. If he spends as much time on his game as he does on Twitter opposing teams are going to be in a lot of trouble! According to azcentral.com he was limited to conditioning and shooting and could be playing pickup games in two weeks. I think conditioning is going to be the hardest part about this comeback. From what I understand he was to have very limited physical activity since his eye injury and surgery in February. He was definitely not supposed to be running up and down a basketball court and shooting jumpers. It doesn’t sound like anything about this comeback has been easy on Amare. From azcentral: “Stoudemire was cleared to begin working out three weeks ago and has done so each weekday morning with Nelson.” “That followed a 10-day stretch in which he had to lay face down for all but two hours of each day.” Is this guy going to play defense this year? Improved defensive play could really offset any struggles he has in getting his offensive game back. Who am I kidding. Amare knows Dunks sell tickets and get endorsements. If the Suns are going to keep him I hope to see some of that offensive ability that made him rookie of the year and a four time NBA All Star.

Boldin Is Playing His Cards Right.

Dan Bickley has an article on azcentral.com discussing the Boldin situation from Anquan’s perspective. I don’t think that it reveals anything that fans and teammates haven’t already figured out. From a fans perspective the situation is going great. Anquan, although pissed off, is playing nice and killing them with kindness. Anquan knows what’s in his best interst and that is not to appear like a hot-head, someone who dissrupts the team chemistry. The better he performs and the better the Arizona Cardinals do, the better off he will be in the long run. A successful season for him and the Cards means he will most likely get what he wants in the end, either a better contract with the Cards or a better contract with some other team. Everybody seems to be on the same page. Kurt Warner does not want to lose Boldin, he knows Larry Fitzgerald would be in double coverage every down with out another threat out there on the field. “I know he’s not comfortable with his situation, because we talk about it,” quarterback Kurt Warner said. But he’s done an amazing job of being able to step aside from that and relate to us, laugh with us and joke with us. You see a lot of guys in this league who are unhappy, and they make it known. It’s out there every day, and you have to walk on eggshells around them, because anything can tip them off. Q’s not like that. He has a great rapport with his teammates, and that’s such a blessing for us.” I think it’s great everyone seems focused on the mission at hand, and that is to get back to the Super Bowl baby!!

Coyotes To Fly Coach All The Way.

Posted by buddha On August - 17 - 2009

Picture 1

This can’t be a good sign. According to the Wall Street Journal the NHL is requiring that the Coyotes fly US Airways to away games instead of the luxury charter service provided by the teams majority owner. This is like the movie Major League, when the female owner wants the team to fail so she starts doing things like taking away their plane and leaves them a bus to take to away games. The NHL claims this is going to result in savings for the bankrupt team. “The league said the team, which filed for bankruptcy protection in May, shouldn’t use the same flight arrangements as last season, when the Coyotes spent $2.6 million to charter Swift Air LLC jets.” I bet the team is loving this. “If the league succeeds in forcing the switch, some Coyotes, such as 6-foot-3, 225-pound goalie Jason LaBarbera, may not be happy about squeezing into coach-sized seats.” What’s next? Catering by Subway? Read the story here

“Shazam!” Phoenix Suns Legend Al McCoy.

Posted by buddha On August - 14 - 2009

I love Phoenix Suns radio broadcaster Al McCoy. He is one of the best broadcasters of his generation and winner of the Curt Gowdy Media Award. He is definitely a hometown broadcaster, but not afraid to call the games as he sees them. If that means complaining about the lack of “calls” or a lack-luster effort by the Suns he’ll tell you about it. Todays broadcasters suck for the most part. Watching a  NBA basketball game is like listening to amateur comedy hour. Having three broadcasters in the booth is ridiculous and makes you want to watch with the mute button on. If I hear another argument between Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy, I am going to throw the remote at the dog (I could never throw it at my big screen). Al McCoy is about to start his 38th season with the Suns organization. McCoy did an interview for the SUNS.COM. He has seen a lot on his time and talks about some of his favorite memories; “Those two triple overtime games in the Finals (Game 5 vs. Boston in 1976 and Game 3 vs. Chicago in ’93) would certainly be my biggest memories right now. When Garfield Heard hit the “Shot Heard ‘Round the World” that sent that game in the Boston Garden into a third overtime was one of the great shots. There have been many, though, such as Rex Chapman’s three-point shot at the buzzer in a game along with Dan Marjele’s clutch threes. When I look at my time over the last 37 years, that Garfield Heard shot was probably the most meaningful in my mind.” I sometimes find myself on the  road during Suns games and always turn to AM620 to follow the action. “Suns wearing their home whites, Nash bringing the ball down the right side” Al McCoy really paints a picture and I am going to enjoy listening to him for many more seasons. ASU Quarterback: Starter/Would Be Starter/Actor

Posted by buddha On August - 11 - 2009

Right now Danny Sullivan is projected to be the Sun Devils starting quarterback. Sullivan has looked solid in practices and scrimmages. Most people feel confident we will see him start against Idaho State. Accuracy has been a question at times but he does have great arm strength. Sullivan has a good head on his shoulders and will be expected to be a “game manager” and not really one to put the team on his shoulders and march down the field. From azcentral.com“I told them all at the beginning, their job is to manage the game, not try and win the game,” offensive coordinator Rich Olson said. “Let the guys around them do that. It’ll come down in some game where he (Sullivan) is going to have to make some plays. But for the most part, if he just gets the ball in the hands of the guys that can make plays, he’ll be fine.”

Picture 4

Meanwhile, Brock Osweiler is considered the future quarterback for ASU. You may see him with some starts this season depending on the circumstances, with an eye towards starting for ASU in 2010. In a sense Danny Sullivan looks to be an interim quarterback between Rudy Carpenter and Brock Osweiler. From eastvalleytribune.com“Just ask around. If the Sun Devils were any higher on him, he’d be John Elway. Osweiler has a strong and accurate arm, he’s 6-foot-8 – try to bat down those passes – and he’s athletic enough to have been offered a basketball scholarship by Gonzaga after his freshman year in high school.”

Picture 3

And then there’s Samson Szakacsy. Szakacsy isn’t just a quarterback he is also a musician with his own band (Walking Charlie) he also is an actor having just filmed a independent movie called “Azura”. I don’t know how having all that on your plate could make you a better quarterback but what ever. From azcentral.com,“Football is obviously my first priority,” said the 6-foot-4 sophomore, who will start No. 2 on the depth chart when practice begins next Thursday. “If you passionately make sure you give 110 (percent) in everything you do, I don’t think you can stretch yourself too thin. There are limitless possibilities.” I hope that is true. I think Brock Osweiler looks like a beast, it will be exciting to see what he can do in a game.

Majerle’s Trifecta.

Beers, Wings, Sports Center on every screen. Who doesn’t like a good sports bar? Dan Majerle’s quest to take over valley sports bars is rolling right along with the opening of Majerle’s in Goodyear. I actually spent some time at the Chandler location. Once you have a few “drinks” these places tend to look the same. The only thing I pay attention to besides the game is the waitress. It would be cool if Majerle would guest bartend a couple of shifts, but I guess that would be kinda hard being Assist Coach and all. Thunder Dan; “Goodyear has become one of the fastest-growing areas in metropolitan Phoenix and we are looking forward to becoming a part of the thriving Southwest Valley,” said Dan Majerle, the three-time NBA All-Star and current Suns assistant coach. “We will offer our customers the same award-winning food, exceptional service and great values that have helped make our downtown Phoenix and Chandler locations fan favorites.” Awesome, I look forward to knocking a few back at Majerle’s this season. Wow, the more I write “Majerle’s” the more it sounds like a funky Irish bar. Is a Scottsdale location coming or does Zipps have that market cornered?? Read more here

Amare’s Greatest Tweets

Twitter has become the one of the most popular social media sites because of its convenience and immediacy. And those two attributes make it the most dangerous. You really get a peek into someone’s head when they use twitter. Thoughts and ideas that one would normally keep to himself, suddenly become public. Reading Amare Stoudemire’s twitter page reveals that “Sun Tzu” is a very complicated man. Read on

Old Man Warner Still Recovering From Surgery

Posted by buddha On August - 3 - 2009

Picture 3

How old is Kurt Warner? My dad is like 66 and he is complaining of hip pain too. But seriously, Warner had hip surgery in March, I suppose playing so many years in the NFL will age your body about 20 years, and this pain is considered a normal part of recovery. You know, my biggest fear is an injury plagued season. Beanie Wells is injured, hopefully not a sign of things to come for him, and Warner is not 100% heading into training camp. I hope the team can stay healthy going into the start of the season. Don’t worry. If Warner can’t do it Leinart can. Matt Leinart is in training camp, competting for the #2 quarter back position. That’s right, competting to be number two. I think Leinart has finally been broken. To go from Heisman Trophy winner to fighting for a chance to hold a clip board is a humbling journey. I think this training camp is character building and gives Leinart something to focus on. He has talent and may very well be the future quarter back for the Arizona Cardinals.

Randall McDaniel Hall Of Fame Bound

Posted by buddha On August - 3 - 2009

This is great news Sun Devil fans. Randall McDaniel, one of the best offensive linemen of all time will be inducted into the Pro Football Hall Of Fame in Canton Ohio. According to azcentral he is the first Arizona High School football player to go to the Hall Of Fame, he played for Agua Fria. Awesome! McDaniel played on the 1986 ASU team that won the Rose Bowl, defeating Michigan 22-15. He was inducted into the College Football Hall Of Fame earlier this year. The two-time first team All American also played in 12 Pro Bowls. Randall McDaniel is currently teaching second grade in Minnesota. He is like 6’4 and over 200 pounds so I imagine his kids are well behaved. The Hall Of Fame ceremony takes place August 8th, 4PM , NFl network. Read more about it here

Beanie Wells Ankle Injury, Out For Week

Posted by buddha On August - 2 - 2009

This is not the way Beanie Wells wanted to start training camp. Wells suffered a sprained ankle yesterday during some simple running drills. He walked off the field but is expected to miss most of next week. Wells agreed to terms with the Cards and signed a five year deal worth $11.8 million, with $6.3 million guaranteed. Sprained ankle, no biggie. I sprained my ankle stumbling out of Coach House the other night, I was back on my feet the next night with barely a limp. Read more about the minor injury at azcentral.com
